Local Champion Excels at Nationals
The event for the top 11 – 13 yr old swimmers in Great Britain is only open to those swimmers achieving the very tough qualifying times. Kate qualified for 4 events the 100m and 200m Backstroke, 1500m Freestyle and the 200m Individual Medley.
The first day of the championships was a tough day with both the 200m backstroke and the gruelling 1500m freestyle in the programme, however, she was undaunted by the tough schedule and strong competition delivering for the second year in succession qualification for the 200m Backstroke Final in a personal best time of 2mins 30.98secs placing her in the top 10 swimmers in the 12 years age group for this event. Her success continued in the longest event of the championships with a top ten finish in the 1500m freestyle. Kathryn came home in 8th place recording a massive 25 second personal best time of 18mins 41.53seconds.
After 2 days rest she was back in the pool for the 100m backstroke making the final and finishing with a superb 6th place and personal best time of 1min 10.25secs. The final day of the championships saw her compete in the final and overall placing decider event the 200m Individual Medley, despite a below par swim it was still good enough to secure her an overall finishing position of 8th out of 107 top class 12 year old swimmers from all over the nation.
Phoenix’s Head Coach, Jon Pearse, said of her achievements ‘Kathryn has had yet another great season and she continues to reap the rewards of staying with the Club’s structured teaching and training programme. She joined just before her 4th birthday and has been through all our stages of development and is testament to how well it works and the new ASA/British Gas partnership of from ‘Paddling Pool to Podium’. She is the only swimmer from Basildon clubs to make the Nationals showing that our training plan works. She has worked hard to become overall 12yrs Age Group County Champion, East Regional 400m Individual Medley Champion in June and become one of the top 12 year old swimmers in the nation. Her team mates and the Club support her and in doing so develop themselves to achieve more than they have before and the Club has continued to cement itself as a top competitive swimming Club in Essex and the local area. I would like to thank Frank Palmer and his staff at Gloucester Park for their support allowing Kathryn additional pool time to finalise her training and preparation for the Nationals.’
