Ford scored two trophies at the What Car? Car of the Year Awards 2015 as the Fiesta ST-2 won Best Hot Hatch and the All-New Mondeo Estate 1.6 TDCi 120 Econetic Zetec was named Best Estate Car.
What Car? sought out the best cars to buy on any budget in around 16 different categories, from small city cars to large SUVs. After many miles of tough testing, the Fiesta ST-2 fended off the competition in its category from cars such as the Suzuki Swift and the more expensive BMW M135i.
As we all know, hot hatches have to provide plenty of fun performance per pound, but also everyday practicality and the low running costs, safety and reliability we all value.
What Car?’s review said: “The Fiesta’s 1.6 turbo petrol engine is gutsy and loves to be revved, but it’s how well the Ford handles that makes it such a brilliant hot hatch. It is brilliant to drive, whether you’re out for a back-road strop or on the daily commute.”
“It’s also great to live with, with decent real-world economy, plenty of standard kit and reasonable running costs. The Fiesta might be full of the latest technology to make it easier on the environment and safe to be in, but it is an undeniably old-school hot hatch. That is a very good thing indeed.”
“Press the start button and the 1.6-litre turbo engine awakens innocuously, then remains reasonably in the background until you're in a position to let it strut its stuff. The steering is sharp, quick and offers a decent amount of feedback, and the car follows your commands to the letter."
For the Best Estate What Car? looked for what we would all want in our ideal estate – the capacity to carry pretty anything and everything, the clever use of that space, great performance and exceptional value for money.
What Car? said: “Estate cars have a very simple brief, but it's hard to find one that excels in every single area. Yet Ford has managed to get it spot on with the new Mondeo. Just like the old car, it's fantastic to drive, with a refined engine and a smooth ride. The boot is the perfect shape for carrying a wide range of everyday items, from a huge weekly shop to a full complement of suitcases."
“It's cracking value, too, and will be cheaper to run than most of its rivals, thanks to CO 2 emissions of just 99g/km."
“It's great to drive, with precise steering, a beautifully smooth ride on the standard 16-inch alloy wheels and well-weighted controls. Despite its leisurely 0-62mph time of 12.3 seconds, the 1.6 pulls without complaint, even below 1500rpm. It's nearly as refined as the pricier 2.0-litre model, too."
Mark Ovenden, Ford Britain managing director, said: “Ford’s flying start to 2015 is celebrated by these What Car? wins. New Mondeo is now arriving in dealerships – hard on the heels of the new Focus. With new C-MAX and S-MAX models also in the pipeline and the legendary Mustang, 2015 will bring plenty of further fresh products to Ford dealerships.”
