Visit FordStore Dunton near Basildon from 5th – 7th August to see the official Team Sky Ford Mustang used to scout Tour de France stages for British winner Chris Froome!
One of the stars of the 2016 Tour de France had power and pace to burn as it growled and prowled around the demanding stages, plus it probably beat Chris Froome into Paris!
As Team Sky’s exclusive supplier of cars and vans, Ford provided a fleet that was the envy of every other team. It included the Mondeo Estate, Mondeo 5-door, S-MAX, Edge, and Transit models in addition to a New Ford Mustang that was used as a scouting vehicle during the classic 3,519-kilometre cycling race.
To assist in its advanced role, the Team Sky Mustang is kitted out with radios to help follow the race's "Radio Tour" broadcasts to relay information to team members, a TV to monitor the big picture of the race, and a horn to alert spectators that the Pony Express is coming through!
The Mustang was also equipped with Rod Ellingworth, the Head of Performance Operations for Team Sky, who covered the ground ahead of the riders for each of the 21 stages to give them vital details on the weather conditions, the road surfaces and layouts, and any particularly perilous parts with sharp corners, narrow routes or fanatical spectators.
He explained: "Spectators love the Team Sky Mustang — I’ve never seen anything like it in cycling. People call to me and gesture for me to drive towards them. The other teams want to know more about the car. Even the police stopped me, because they wanted to see the Mustang up close."
Once it was clear that Chris Froome was the winner after the penultimate stage (the final stage cycling into Paris not usually being contested by general classification riders), the Team Sky Ford Mustang was decked out in a special livery to match Froomey's yellow jersey. For our exclusive display though, it can only be the classic Team Sky black and blue!
