Ford's 1.0 EcoBoost Single-Seat Racer Pits at Essex Ford

On September 8th Essex Ford Dunton in Basildon saw the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost single-seat racer take a rare pit stop. You have just two weeks to take look!

The American manufacturer's award-winning 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine has been fitted in a Formula Ford chassis, which normally accommodates an EcoBoost 1.6-litre turbo engine. With a few modifications – such as registration plates, lights, a horn, and different wing mirrors and tyres – the single-seater was made street legal and raced around the famous Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit in Germany.

This surprise package certainly shocked a few people who were unaware of the EcoBoost at that time. The car completed a lap in 7 minutes and 22 seconds – the 11th quickest time ever recorded on the track. The rear-wheel drive racer got around the 12.94-mile circuit at an average speed of 105mph.

That time made it faster than several supercars, including a Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4, a 660hp Ferrari Enzo, and a 602hp Pagani Zonda! No three-cylinder or four-cylinder cars have ever lapped the Nurburgring quicker.

Racing driver Nick Tandy said: “This little engine has people rubbing their eyes in disbelief. It's simply astonishing that a three-cylinder, one-litre engine can deliver that kind of performance." Ford stated that this 495-kilo single seater's unofficial top speed is around 158mph and should be able to get from 0-60mph in less than four seconds.

While this engine was tuned rather differently to those found in the Ford Fiesta, B-MAX, EcoSport, Focus, C-MAX, Grand C-MAX, Tourneo Connect, Transit Courier and Transit Connect, to generate 202bhp from the three cylinders, Ford still found that this engine was also remarkably economical. It was discovered to give 118mpg at 35 mph, and 57mpg at 75 mph!

Roelant de Waard, VP of Marketing and Sales for Ford of Europe, explained: “We wanted to prove that size doesn't matter by showing everyone what an amazingly capable engine we have developed in the 1.0-litre EcoBoost. What better way than by beating some of the best supercars in the world on the Nordschleife, while using a fraction of the fuel."

While you won't be able to test drive the car, you can experience Ford's clever technology for yourself in the aforementioned models. An EcoBoost means you'll be able to drive further with just one litre and three cylinders in some of the world's most popular vehicles. It's worth looking at as it deservedly won the International Engine Of The Year Award in 2012, 2013 and 2014 giving up to 140PS of performance, while keeping CO 2 emissions as low as 99g/km – all from a cast-iron engine block the same size as a piece of A4 paper!

If you've never driven an engine that gives such terrific performance without compromising on fuel economy or emissions, or if you just want to get a get a close look at the racer before it speeds off into the distance, you'll need to visit Essex Ford Dunton in Basildon soon!
